Art II
This course is designed to build upon skills acquired in Art I. Further exploration of methods, materials, and concepts from Art I will be briefly revisited and then explored in more depth to develop further understanding. This class will explore the possibilities and potentials of several media such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Students will also learn about careers in the visual arts and roles of artists in today’s society. Active sketchbook entries and weekly homework assignments are to be maintained and completed to further individual creativity and knowledge.
Course Outline:
Welcome to Art 2! In this course we will be further exploring the visual arts, bettering your technical skills, and encouraging creative thinking. Art 2 will build upon your prior art knowledge and understanding, and introduce you to new concepts and ways of visually communicating your ideas.
One of the main focuses of this course will be art history. There have been many art movements over time that encompass many ideas and are identified by unique styles. Art history is not just what happened in the past; it continues to affect and influence today’s artists, tomorrow’s artists, and YOU! During this course there will be a group collaborative assignment where you and your group members will create a large-scale piece of art that represents one of the many influential art movements. This will require collaboration and research with your group members to effectively communicate your investigation of an art movement.
Because this is NOT an introductory art class, I am expecting that students enrolled possess an appreciation for art. Students are expected to work hard and take responsibility for their learning. Experimentation with ideas and materials is highly encouraged. Participating in your learning during and outside of school is a requirement!
Weekly homework assignments will be given to help expand creative possibilities outside of the classroom, and should also be seen as an opportunity to be a bit liberated in your self expression as an artist. Journal/ sketchbook entries and vocabulary for the current lesson should be kept and recorded in an active sketchbook. Proposals for projects and individual evaluations/ reflections of work completed will be required to help enhance your understanding of the creative process. Peer review and/ or participation in critiques will be an essential part of active learning and class participation.
Your expectations:
As with any of your classes, I expect that you will come to this class with and open mind and positive attitude. The classroom should be considered a neutral place to gather, respect one another, and feel safe. It is important to respect your peers, teachers, mentors, etc, but also yourself. The most enjoyable atmosphere is one you are comfortable in.
You will also be expected to put forth your best effort with your work. Your work is a direct representation of yourself; do yourself justice! All assignments are to be completed and handed in when due, including homework or out of class assignments. Due dates are set to keep your work on track so that you may spend ample time to take your piece to the highest level. Full class participation daily is essential, as a daily grade for work completed is noted and factored into your grade. Do not be late to class; it is unfair to inconvenience others because of your tardiness.
Please remember the guidelines Attleboro High has set for you such as: no hats, cell phones or electronic devices (i-pods, etc.) as well as wearing appropriate clothing. There is a time and place for these things, but school is not one of them. These are all outlined in your student handbook. Students infringing upon these guidelines will first be warned; repeat offenses will result in a referral. These expectations are set as goals or reminders to assist you in becoming a responsible adult and adopting positive habits.
If you have any questions, any, please don’t hesitate to ask me, I’d be happy to help you out!!
Feel free to ask during or after class, or even contact me via email.
