Painting II

In this advanced painting course, you will continue to build upon your foundation of skills used in Painting I: (attention to detail, color usage, values, craftsmanship).
With this strong foundation and understanding of the basic properties used in art and painting, you should now also start thinking creatively and even consider “bending the rules” at times. Now that you have the “tools”(skills) to create art, use them in an interesting way to make the ordinary, extraordinary.

Assignments:
1) “3 of the Same” (create 3 paintings of the same subject: b&w; complimentary; full color)
2) “Inspiration from text” (create a painting inspired by a poem or story)
3) “Palette Knife Painting”
4) “Contrast” (varying color intensities; color relationships; values; OR juxtaposition of contrasting subject matter)
5) “What If…” (create a piece that depicts a surrealistic impossibility)
6) “Large Canvas Painting” (group/ collaborative piece)
Homework:
1) “Artist’s Choice” (Create a painting of your choosing. Any media; size minimum 12”x12”)
* Extra Credit may be done when a student is finished with the assigned project before the deadline.
Extra credit projects may be of the student’s own choice or assigned by the teacher.
Extra credit projects will be awarded points based on level of difficulty and how much the student challenges oneself.
Grades:
- In-class projects 100 points each
- Homework project 100 points
- Journals/ Critiques 10 points each
- Extra credit (optional) (points based on level of difficulty and how much the
student challenges oneself.)
- Class participation 100 points
- Citizenship (behavior,
responsibility, respectfulness) 50 points

Course Objectives:
- This painting course offers students an opportunity to explore and expand skills through the use of wet media such as tempera, acrylic, and watercolor. Students will learn different techniques and develop skills to successfully express a personal vision within their work.
- Understanding of relevant vocabulary and proper usage in communication.
- Demonstration of competence in a variety of wet media/ materials.
- Successful use of visual communication through utilizing concept, creativity, and skill.
Expectations:
- Put forth your best effort, no matter what your skill level may be. The only way you will learn and get better is if you try!
- Be prepared daily. Bring materials needed for class. If you are unprepared, it will affect your grade negatively.
- Be respectful towards yourself and others. Rules set forth in the AHS handbook apply in this class. Deviation from these rules and guidelines will not be tolerated.
- Be on time to class. Do no inconvenience others with your tardiness.
- Enjoy your time here. This is a unique time in your life. Savor this moment and your experience in this class!

- Challenge yourself. This is how you grow and learn new things.
- Try something new! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t but at least you tried and hopefully had a beneficial experience.
- Take time to consider multiple ideas/ options. You don’t always have to do the first thing that comes to mind.
- Don’t be so literal! Try a creative approach to your problem-solving.
- Take the time to do it right- don’t rush. Extensions are always an option to those who deserve them.
- Work hard and don’t give up. Not everything comes easy; even to the experienced, professional artist.
